DeKALB, IL- Northern Illinois won the final three matches of the evening and pulled away from the Golden Flashes in a 23-13 defeat in a Mid-American Conference dual on Wednesday night.
Kent State won four of the 10 matches on Wednesday night, led by Andrew McNally's 13-2 major decision victory at 174. McNally proved why he was the MAC's number-four wrestler in his class and his victory tied the dual up at 13 before Northern Illinois took the final three bouts of the night.
Tim Rooney got the Flashes on the board with a sudden victory over Caleb Brooks at 133. The second match of the evening went into extra time tied at one before Rooney earned the escape and the sudden victory. Kody Komara pulled the same trick at 149, knocking off McCoy Kent by the same 3-1 sudden victory margin.
Kade Byland defeated Izzak Olejnik, who had come into the dual as the MAC's number four wrestler at 165. Byland took care of business with a 10-6 victory by decision. That got the Flashes within four at 13-9 before McNally was able to tie it up.
Brit Wilson showed why he is ranked by the conference at 184 with a win over Shane Mast but two razor thin decisions for the Huskies pushed the dual into Northern Illinois' favor.
The loss puts the Flashes at 2-4 overall in duals and 0-2 in the MAC. Kent State rounds out the road trip and the 2019 portion of their schedule on Thursday at Wisconsin. The dual is also set for a 8 p.m. eastern start time.
