In order to be eligible, applicants had to be born on or after January 1, 1985, and must be currently serving as a high school head coach, two-year college full-time assistant or head coach, or NAIA/NCAA (all divisions) full-time or head coach.
Windham spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons as a defensive quality control coach at Georgia before joining the new coaching staff at Kent State. He helped the Bulldogs to an SEC Championship in 2017 and advanced to the College Football Playoff national championship game.
