Waco, Tx. – Redshirt freshman pitcher Andrea Scali impressed in Kent State's 6-0 win over North Texas (6-0) at the Baylor Invitational at Getterman Stadium. Scali almost completed a no-hitter, but lost it to the first batter in the bottom of the seventh inning. She fanned 12 Mean Green hitters, tying a career-high.
The Golden Flashes (4-3) fell in the second game of the doubleheader to #10 Louisiana (11-0), 21-1.
"It's a tale of two teams right now for us. We need to make sure we are getting a more consistent overall effort," said Kent State head coach Eric Oakley. "That's what this trip is about, we are discovering what kind of team we are going to be."
Game 1: Kent State 6, North Texas 0
The Golden Flashes utilized two crooked numbers in the third and sixth innings to down North Texas. Sophomore Kaitlyn Miller began the top of the third inning with a double to left to spark a big Flashes inning. Senior Bailey Brownfield then doubled down the left field line to put the Flashes on the board. Sophomore Carlee Selle followed up with a two-run home run to centerfield, to put Kent State up, 3-0.
After a brief rain delay in the middle of the fifth inning, the Flashes bats warmed up for three more runs in the sixth. With the bases loaded senior Hailey Hopkins was called to pinch hit. She delivered by driving a two RBI base hit through the right side to score sophomore Alexis Taube and freshman Sabrina Kerschner. Miller capped off the frame with an RBI groundout to short.
Scali (4-0) kept the no hitter intact until the top of the seventh inning. She only allowed one walk and one hit by pitch. The Parma, Ohio native has not allowed an earned run over the first 23 innings of her collegiate career.
Bailey Brownfield and Selle both highlighted the Kent State offense as both went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Game 2: #10 Louisiana 21, Kent State 1 (5 innings)
Louisiana led from the first inning on as a first inning walk, two stolen bases and an error put UL on top for good. The Ragin' Cajuns out hit Kent State 19-3 and were aided by two Golden Flashes errors as they put up a run in every inning of the game. UL poured it on late with back-to-back eight run innings, but elected to only use two pinch-hit substitutions all game.
Sophomore Brenna Brownfield highlighted the Kent State offense with a solo home run, her first of the season.
The Golden Flashes used three different pitchers and freshman Grace Saupe made her first collegiate appearance. KSU used four pinch hitters and freshman Megan Turner recorded her first career walk. Freshman Katie Synnestvedt made her collegiate debut in a pinch-hitting assignment.
