KENT, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics team will host its Pink Meet to support the fight against breast cancer in the M.A.C. Center against Western Michigan on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m.
Kent State gymnastics works with former Golden Flash gymnast, Kristine Slam, with all proceeds donated to the Central Ohio Surgical Association (COSA) and its COSACares fund. Slam founded and runs COSACares, which is a grant that focuses on men and women who are or have been affected by breast cancer. It also helps the families with everyday life situations, such as buying groceries or taking children to school.
"There are many people that we are connected to that have been touched by this disease," said assistant coach Sharon Sabin, who coordinates the event. "Whether it's parents on our team or some of my old teammates, it makes you feel good and that you are doing something to help."
The Pink Meet matchup pits the Golden Flashes against the Broncos in Kent State's fourth Mid-American Conference competition of the season. The Flashes are 10-5 overall this season, including 1-2 against MAC opponents, and have currently won six in a row.
Kent State went 5-0 this past weekend, with wins in the George Washington Quad and the Kent State Tri. The Flashes took down No. 25 NC State and George Washington on Sunday with a score of 195.725, its second-highest score of the season.
After two solid meets over the weekend, the Flashes' RQS (Regional Qualifying Score) is up to 194.545 and ranks 40th in the country among Division-I programs.
With a season-high beam score of 49.175, the Flashes jumped to 26th in the country in the event. Seniors Sarah Lippowitsch and Kennedy Plude led KSU with scores of 9.850, while sophomore Abby Fletcher and freshmen Riley Danielson and Cami Klein each scored 9.825.
