Late Rally Foiled at Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, La. – Despite a late three-run rally in the seventh inning, the Kent State softball team (6-6) fell 7-5 on the road to Southeastern Louisiana (9-8) on Wednesday evening. The Golden Flashes late charge was led by Alexis Taube's three-run blast and the Flashes had the tying run at the dish, but could not tie the game.

How It Happened

The Lions scored the first four runs of the game and put up two spots in the first and second innings to take control, 4-0. Kent State chipped away in the fourth inning with a single tally on a sacrifice fly to left by Maria Cegledy that scored Brooklyn Whitt. SE Louisiana scored two more in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.

In the fifth inning Bailey Brownfield hit her team-leading sixth double of the season and drove in Kennadie Goth, but the Lions answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame.

Kristyn Eckl walked and Vanessa Vodan singled to put two on with two out in the top of the seventh with Kent State trailing, 7-2. Taube then crushed the second homer of her career to center to bring the Flashes within two. Hunter Brancifort singled with two out to bring the tying run to the plate in pinch hitter Chloe Cruz, but she popped up to second to end the game.

Anilese Kelly (1-3) started and threw 2.1 innings allowing seven hits with four earned runs, three walks and struck out 2. Brenna Brownfield made her first appearance in the circle of the season and tossed the final 3.2 innings allowing three hits with three runs, however none were earned. Errors hurt Kent State it committed three and only four of the Lions' seven runs were earned.

The Lions utilized five pitchers with reliever Tanner Wright (3-3) earning the win, while Sophie Hannabas earned the save recording one out.
