Softball Wins MAC Opener at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Utilizing five extra-base hits and the pitching of Andrea Scali, Kent State (8-15) defeated Toledo (8-16) 6-1 at Scott Park in the Mid-American Conference opener on Friday afternoon. The Golden Flashes out hit the Rockets 10-4 and used three two-run innings to score its six runs.
How it Happened
Kaitlyn Miller began the game with a bang as she doubled to the right centerfield gap to leadoff the first. Kennadie Goth immediately followed up with an RBI triple. Bailey Brownfield drove her in with a sacrifice fly to give the Flashes a 2-0 lead.
Scali held strong in the circle during the middle frames and the offense found the scoreboard again in the fourth. Bailey Brownfield doubled with one out and Carlee Selle smashed her first home run of the season to give KSU a 4-0 advantage.
In the seventh inning, the Golden Flashes added more insurance with a Goth leadoff single and then a Selle walk. Bailey Brownfield laid down a sacrifice bunt and then Brenna Brownfield smacked a pinch-hit double to center to drive in two.
Goth finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Selle was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Bailey Brownfield registered her 34th career double and is now tied for ninth in school history with Megan Verde (2004-07).
Scali (8-6) pitched all seven innings and surrendered the only Rocket run in the seventh inning. She allowed four hits while walking six and struck out nine batters. Erin Hunt (5-6) took the loss for Toledo and threw 4.2 innings and allowed seven hits and four runs with three strikeouts. Kailey Minarchick worked the final 2.1 frames in relief and allowed three hits and two runs.
Up Next
The Golden Flashes close out the series with Toledo on Saturday March 23 at 1 and 3 p.m. in a doubleheader. Kent State will then embark on a midweek road swing to the Northeast Corridor next week beginning with a doubleheader against last season's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Monmouth on Tuesday, March 26 beginning at 2 p.m. The Flashes will also play a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 27 at Lehigh beginning at 2:30 p.m.
