
Lawson Holds Lead in Decathlon Following Day 1 at Tennessee Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Kent State's TJ Lawson scored 4,280 points through the first five events of the decathlon Thursday at the Tennessee Relays and holds a 116-point lead after the opening day of the meet.
Lawson clocked a personal-best time of 10.78 in the 100-meter dash to open the competition. He followed with an outdoor personal-best in the long jump, soaring 24'-4.25" to finish third and earn 915 points, his highest-scoring event of the day. The redshirt junior then added a victory in the shot put with a top throw of 48'-7.25", which was nearly five feet further than any other competitor. Lawson ended the day by taking second in the high jump (6'-9.50") and third in the 400-meter dash (50.12).
Also competing in the decathlon for the Flashes are Devin Snowden and Jacob Mally. Snowden sits in eighth-place with 3,636 points. He started strong in his first career decathlon with 830 points in the 100-meter dash (11.14) and 814 points in the long jump (22'-11.75"). Mally heads into Friday in ninth-place with 3,553 points. He recorded a personal-best time of 11.30 in the 100-meter dash and placed fourth in the high jump with a top height of 6'-6".
In the only field events of the day, Jake Wickey placed 10th in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 196'-1" and Bradley Heck took 14th in the men's javelin with a top throw of 184'-9".
The Golden Flashes will be back in action at the Tennessee Relays on Friday, beginning with the women's pole vault and continuation of the decathlon at 2 p.m. Individual running events are scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m. SEC Network + will have coverage of the day's events.
