KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A pair of Kent State outdoor records were set as TJ Lawson claimed the men's decathlon title and Nicole Yeargin had an impressive performance in the women's 200-meter dash invitational at the Tennessee Relays on Friday.
Lawson set personal-records in two of the day's five events and finished with 7,876 points, besting the previous record set by Brendon Falconer in 1998 by 11 points. Georgia's Johannes Erm was the only collegiate athlete who had posted a better score this year entering the weekend.
Running the 200m dash for the first time during the 2019 outdoor season, Yeargin sprinted to a time of 23.26 seconds to shatter the previous Golden Flashes record of 23.64 set by Shanequa Williams in 2013. Her time was good for seventh-place in the competition and third among wind-legal times.
Earlier in the day, Yeargin also placed seventh in the 400-meter dash with an outdoor personal-best of 54.76, which is the 10th-fastest time in program history.
Samory Fraga led all collegiate athletes with a top mark of 25'-4.50" to place second in the long jump. Da'One Jordan recorded a personal-best leap of 23'-5.50" to finish eighth.
Jacob Mally used a strong second day of competition to finish fifth in the decathlon with 6,823 points. Mally posted personal-records in Friday's first four events and totaled 3,270 points on the day. His score moves him into ninth on Kent State's all-time decathlon list.
Saturday's final day of competition is scheduled to begin with field events at 11 a.m. and relays getting underway at 1 p.m. SEC Network + will have coverage of the day's events.
