CLEVELAND, Ohio – For the first time in her career, Kent State senior outfielder Jen Cader has received a conference weekly award and was named this week's MAC Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday (April 2). It is Kent State's fourth weekly award this season as redshirt freshman Andrea Scali has been named Pitcher of the Week three times.
Cader turned in a career week in which she recorded eight RBIs in one day and sparked a Golden Flashes offense that won three games. She batted .556 (5-for-9) and cranked two doubles, two home runs and drove in eight RBIs. Cader slugged 1.444 for the week and scored four runs while drawing two walks. On Tuesday at Monmouth with Kent State down to its final out, Cader clubbed the go-ahead three-run home run to right to lift the Flashes to a 3-1 victory over the defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions. In the nightcap, Cader hit another three-run home run and drove in two more with a double. She also recorded another double against Lehigh.
With Eastern Michigan discontinuing the sport after last season, the MAC has abolished divisions for the first time since 1997. There will be one player or pitcher of the week, except for co-honors, across the league as opposed to previous years when both the East and West Divisions received weekly awards.
Kent State plays five conference games this week and hosts Ohio for a Tuesday, April 2 doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Golden Flashes will then travel to Western Michigan for the first time since 2014 for a three-game series that commenced on Friday, April 5 at 3 p.m. The series concludes with a doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, April 6.
