Baseball Slams the Door on Canisius

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University baseball team (18-18, 7-6 MAC) improved to a .500 winning percentage on the season, slugging past Canisius (19-19, 12-3 MAAC) 10-1 at Schoonover Stadium Wednesday evening. The Flashes tallied 10 hits on the night and Pavin Parks launched his sixth home run of the year to spark the offense.
Three Flashes recorded multi-hit games on the night while Parks led the team going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a walk. Redshirt sophomore Ben Carew also collected a pair of hits with two RBIs and two runs scored while sophomore Michael Turner notched two RBIs for the Flashes.
Redshirt freshman Peyton Deats earned the win on the mound, improving to a 3-0 record on the season. In his ninth appearance this season, Deats pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, while striking out three. Junior Zach Schultz started the game and allowed just one hit in 2.0 innings of work while striking out two. Redshirt sophomore Tyler Drabick, junior John Matthews and senior Pavin Parks each appeared to close out the game.
Parks sparked the Kent State offense and scored the first run of the day with a solo home run lasered off the scoreboard in right field in the bottom of the second inning.
The Flashes extended the lead to 4-0 an inning later as Turner knocked a two-run double down the left field line and Parks added a run on a double to left field.
The score remained until Canisius managed a run in the top of the eighth inning.
Kent State responded by putting up six additional runs with two outs in the bottom of the frame to bring the final score to 10-1. O'Brien scored on a two-out dropped third strike before Parks added a run on a wild pitch a batter later. Freshman Justin Kirby then picked up an RBI on a single to center field and Carew followed a two-run single. Junior Cam Touchette rounded out the day with an RBI-single through the left side.
Next up, the Flashes will head to Athens, Ohio to face Ohio University for a three-game Mid-American Conference series Friday through Sunday, April 26-28.
