Scali One-Hits Central Michigan in MAC Tournament Victory

AKRON, Ohio –  Redshirt freshman pitcher Andrea Scali was one out away from a no-hitter as Kent State (27-23) defeated Central Michigan (22-28-1) 3-0 at Firestone Stadium on Friday afternoon at Firestone Stadium in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The No. 2 seeded Golden Flashes advance in the loser's bracket and will now battle No. 7 Toledo at 7 p.m. The Flashes have won two games today, including a 4-1 victory over Ball State this morning.
Kellie Abeska made a diving play to reel in a bouncing ball at second for the first out of the game that spearheaded Kent State's energy for the remainder of the game. In the bottom of the first, Hunter Brancifort singled, and then with two outs Brenna Brownfield walloped a two-run homer to left to put the Flashes in front.
Central Michigan put its first baserunner on with a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth, but Megan Turner charged from first and dove to catch a popped-up sacrifice bunt attempt and then doubled the runner off from first.
Kent State scored again in the fifth as Kennadie Goth led off with a base hit and then advanced to third on a Kaitlyn Miller base hit. Bailey Brownfield then drove her in with a groundout to the right side.
The Chippewas broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the top of the seventh by Erika Underwood.
Scali (21-8) allowed only the one hit and faced one over the minimum. She registered seven strikeouts and moved into sole possession of the eighth-most wins in a single season in school history. Her 253 strikeouts is the seventh most in a single-season and is one away from tying Kylie Reynolds (2007) 254 for the most strikeouts by a freshman.
Kaitlyn Bean (8-7) threw six innings and allowed seven hits and three earned runs with one walk and four strikeouts for the Chippewas.
