Four Kent State teams (gymnastics, softball, men's cross country and women's golf) recently received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic performance. Baseball joined the four recognized teams among the five Kent State programs to rank No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR).
Public Recognition Awards are based on a program's most recent (four-year) multiyear APRs, awarded to teams posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams, measuring eligibility, graduation and retention.
The NCAA's latest report marked the fifth consecutive year at least four Kent State teams earned perfect multiyear APRs.
Ten Kent State teams ranked in one of the top four spots within their respective MAC sport.
"We are extremely proud of our student-athlete accomplishments off the playing field," Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services Angie Hull said. "The work they put in on a daily basis is shown in their GPAs, graduation rates and these APR scores. These numbers are just another example of their hard work and the dedication of the department, coaches and academic staff who create an environment where student-athletes thrive."
Every Kent State team had a multi-year APR rate above 930 and will not be subject to NCAA penalties.
Seven Kent State teams (women's basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, men's golf, men's cross country, women's golf, softball) posted perfect single-year scores of 1,000 for the 2017-18 academic year.
Earlier this year, Kent State earned its 14th consecutive department term grade point average above a 3.0. Sixteen Golden Flashes from the fall and winter sport seasons have been named MAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes.
