The Medal of Excellence is presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each of the 12 Conference member institutions. Student-athletes had to participate on the varsity level in a conference sponsored sport and shown evidence of academic success, exhibited athletics excellence, leadership and service.
A three-year starting point guard, Avery was recognized by the NCAA as the nation's statistical champion for assist-to-turnover ratio in both his junior and senior seasons. As a sophomore, he helped the Flashes to 2017 MAC Tournament title.
Williams tied for first on bars at the 2019 MAC Championships and earned All-MAC Second Team honors. She is a three-time Academic All-MAC selection and two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete.
"The Medal of Excellence Award is a reinforcement of the core values that we as a conference and each of our member institutions all possess with excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and service," said MAC Commissioner, Jon A. Steinbrecher. "We congratulate all of our Medal of Excellence Award winners."
Avery and Williams were also recognized in April, during Kent State's Devine Honors Dinner. Selection of the recipients was made by each MAC institution.
Twenty-eight years after graduating, Maurice remains as the Golden Flashes' career leader in batting average (.396) and hits (219). She led Kent State to the 1990 Women's College World Series, the last appearance by a MAC softball program. Maurice also set the Kent State career records in on-base percentage (.448), runs scored (107), stolen bases (64) and triples (16).
