National search for replacement begins
KENT, Ohio- After six season's leading the Kent State University women's golf team, head coach Greg Robertson has accepted the head women's golf coaching position at his alma mater, Oklahoma State.
"I want to thank Kent State for the opportunity to be the head women's coach over the last six years," said Robertson. "It has been a special place to me and my family."
"This was an extremely tough decision for me, mainly because of the relationships I've built with the players, department staff, and all of the supporters of our program. I can't thank all the players enough that played for me during my time here. They gave it everything they had on the golf course and in the classroom. Each semester they had one of the highest GPAs in the department and made this program highly competitive on a national level. They have been incredible representatives of this university, and as a coach, I couldn't have asked for more."
"I want to give a special thanks to Herb Page and Maddi Swaney. I was extremely lucky to be able to work with these two. Herb was 100 percent supportive of the women's team from day one, and as a hall of fame coach, he was someone I could rely on for advice and guidance. Maddi is one of the best coaches in college golf, period. Her loyalty to Kent State, hard work, dedication, and knowledge of the game is second to none. Without those two, this program wouldn't be where it is now," finished Robertson.
During his six seasons, the four-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year won 27 tournaments, including six MAC titles, and three-straight appearances to the NCAA Championships.
"We thank Greg for his exceptional accomplishments at Kent State over the past six years, building on the previously established championship culture created by Director of Golf Herb Page and former women's golf coach Mike Morrow," said Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen.
Robertson led Kent State to one of its best seasons in program history this season. Under Robertson, the Flashes set a program record with seven tournament titles, including the program's first-ever regional title at the 2019 NCAA East Lansing Regional. The Flashes ended the season with a program-best scoring average of 288.15. Kent State also was ranked No. 5 in the national rankings, the highest in the history of the program. The Flashes also had two Augusta National Women's Amateur participants, a U.S. Women's Open Qualifier, and a Palmer Cup selection.
"I'm very happy for Greg and his family to go back to his alma mater and coach," said Director of Golf Herb Page. "The six years I've worked with him here at Kent State has been an honor. Greg is a fantastic coach and the record he leaves here speaks for itself."
In his last three seasons, Robertson advanced Kent State to the NCAA Championships each year earning program-best finishes for fifth place in 2017 and 2018 when the Flashes made it to the match play portion of the tournament.
Robertson has coached a handful of talented golfers that totaled 26 individual wins. In addition, Robertson coached 29 all-conference picks and three WGCA All-America selections.
Not only has Robertson coached his team to success on the golf course, but his team's success in the classroom is just as incredible. Under Robertson, the team has gone four-straight semesters with a grade point average of 3.5 or above, while coaching 12 WGCA All-American Scholars and 14 Academic All-MAC Selections.
"The program's performance, both on the course and in the classroom, is rated among the best in the country, and much credit goes to Greg's leadership," added Nielsen. "We wish Greg and his family well as he returns to his alma mater."
Robertson was a member of Oklahoma State's golf program from 1993-97 where he helped the Cowboys win four conference titles and the 1995 national title. Robertson began his coaching career with the Cowboys in 2001 as a volunteer assistant coach.
A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.Â
