KENT, Ohio – Kent State University student-athletes logged 4,995 hours of community service during the 2018-19 academic year and placed 18th nationally among NCAA Division I schools in the year's Helper Helper Report.
Student-athletes at Kent State ranked 18th out of the 100 Division I institutions that competed in the competition. The Golden Flashes completed more hours of community service than any other Mid-American Conference member with six teams finishing in the top-10 of their respective sport. Volleyball placed third overall among women's teams.
"I am very proud of the time and effort that the student-athletes have put forth this past year through community service," said Katie Schilling, associate director for student-athlete development. "Serving the local communities and international communities is something our student-athletes look forward to each year. Helping others is something our athletes strive to do each year, and this year they successfully accomplished another milestone.
NCAA Team Works, which coordinates community service efforts at NCAA championships, and Helper Helper, a volunteer management and tracking platform, launched the community service competition to recognize student-athletes who give back to their communities. This past year, NCAA Division I, II and III teams generated more than 474,000 service hours, resulting in a $12 million economic impact, according to Helper Helper.
Volleyball led the way with 753 service hours to place first in its sport-specific ranking. Habitat for Humanity, The Healing Center and Brookdale Assisted Living were among the organizations the Flashes spent time as volunteers.
Three additional teams logged more than 500 service hours. Men's track and field/cross country completed 577 hours and women's soccer was right behind with 572 hours. Field hockey student-athletes logged 533 hours of service.
Softball (424 hours), women's lacrosse (356 hours) and wrestling (272 hours) all placed in the top-10 for their respective sport.
Student-athletes from six teams were part of a service trip to Costa Rica during winter break. Additionally, numerous teams visited local elementary schools throughout the year as part of a department-wide initiative.
