KENT, Ohio – The Kent State soccer team (0-3-1) fell to Xavier (3-1-1), 1-0, on Friday night at Dix Stadium. The Golden Flashes fought to try and comeback in the second period, and earned five corner kicks, but were unable to score.
"I'm really proud of the effort, that we are showing, we are playing really well," said Kent State head coach Rob Marinaro. "We are trying to balance losing some offensive players and having some people fill in. The games have been competitive against good teams, so we need to keep our heads up and continue to build."
The lone goal was scored in the 31st minute by Xavier's Sydney Schembri from just in front of the goal on the right side. Gabrielle Lopresti and Samantha Dewey teamed up for assists.
The Flashes best opportunity came in the first period with a two-on-two chance from the left side of the net. Junior Vital Kats led KSU with six shots and placed three on target.
The Musketeers led in shots (19-12), shots on goal (8-5), while the Golden Flashes led in corner kicks (6-4). Toni Bizzarro (2-0-1) made five saves in net for XU and earned the shutout while redshirt sophomore Faith O'Neill (0-3-1) registered seven stops.
KSU is back home on Sunday, Sept. 8 for a 1 p.m. tilt against Syracuse. The Golden Flashes will honor their six-member senior class of Yasmine Hall, Amanda Reed, Katie Kovacs, Sierra Henderson-Muschett and Lizz Hathaway before the kick.
