Last Time Out
Kent State returns home after a two-game weekend out west taking on quality competition. The Flashes fell, 2-1, on Thursday against RV Colorado. Redshirt sophomore Karly Hellstrom scored her first career goal in the match in the 20th minute to take the lead. KSU could not hold onto the early lead and the Buffaloes scored in the 36th and 64th minute to come back.
In Saturday night's match, Kent State was shutout for the second time this year, and fell 1-0 to Denver. The only goal for the Pioneers was an own goal off a Kent State player.
Flashes Picked Third in MAC Preseason Poll
The Golden Flashes were tabbed to finish third in the Mid-American Conference preseason coaches' poll and received three votes to win the league's postseason tournament. Kent State had the second-most tournament championship votes behind last season's regular season and tournament champion, Bowling Green. Kent State finished the 2018 campaign with its eighth consecutive 10-win season and is the only MAC team to accomplish that mark.
Scouting Xavier
In their last matchup, the Musketeers took Missouri to double overtime, but fell 3-2. Xavier was down 2-0 early, but worked back to tie the game in the closing minute of regulation. Samantha Dewey is Xavier's leading goal scorer with four, which all came in a road win at Murray State. The Musketeers were selected to finish fourth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll and last year fell to Georgetown in the conference tournament semifinals.
Scouting Syracuse
In its first road contest of the season, Syracuse was shutout by Dartmouth, 2-0, and was outshot, 9-5, in the contest. The Orange defeated both Colgate and Siena in shutout fashion to begin the season. Four different players have registered a goal this season. SU was tabbed to finish 14th in the ACC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going winless in conference a season ago.
Series History
Kent State has only played Xavier once on Sept. 14th, 2017 in the Queen City and it resulted in a 1-1 draw. Vital Kats gave the Flashes an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute of the game. The Golden Flashes outshot Xavier, 16-9, for the match. KSU has only matched up four times against BIG EAST opponents and owns a 1-1-2 record in these matches.
The Flashes downed the Orange last year in Syracuse, 2-1, in the only prior meeting between the schools. The Orange took the lead in the first five minutes of the game, however, Isabelle Mihail scored both of Kent State's goals, in the 80th minute and the golden goal in the 104th minute to complete the comeback. The Golden Flashes are 4-7-3 all-time against ACC opponents.
