Epic Run Closes Fifth Set Comeback Victory in Volleyball Home Opener

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State volleyball team opened the home schedule with an epic 3-2 (22-25, 25-17, 25-19, 26-28, 15-11) come-from-behind victory over Valparaiso in Friday's Golden Flashes Classic nightcap inside of the M.A.C. Center. Trailing 11-7 in the final set, the Golden Flashes ran off eight straight points to win in dramatic fashion.
Freshman Morgan Copley, who finished with a career-best 17 kills, delivered in the clutch and contributed on five of Kent State's final six points of the match. Sophomore Danie Tyson also had 17 kills and posted her second .500 hitting percentage performance of the season.
Freshman Savannah Matthews, redshirt sophomore Alex Haffner and sophomore Erin Gardner each registered a double-double. Matthews totaled 14 kills and a career-high 19 digs. Haffner finished with 51 assists and 19 digs while adding a career-best three total blocks. Gardner tallied a match-high 32 digs and recorded 10 assists.
Redshirt freshman Jacqlyn Caspers made her presence known around the net with a career-high eight blocks to go with eight kills. Senior Ashley Makruski posted a season-best 11 kills and freshman Carissa Reyes had a career-high 15 digs.
Kent State will play twice Saturday on the final day of the Golden Flashes Classic. The Flashes will battle Idaho State at 11 a.m. and then play Robert Morris at 6 p.m.
