Stamper, KSU Women Victorious at Tommy Evans Invitational

NORTON, Ohio — The Kent State men's and women's cross country teams completed a successful 2020 season opener Friday afternoon at the Tommy Evans Invitational Friday held at Silver Creek Metro Park.
Alex Stamper won the men's 8K race in a time of 24:46 for his first collegiate victory. Running in his seventh 8K as a Golden Flash, the junior beat his personal-best by 16 seconds.
A team effort that included five top-8 finishers pushed Kent State's women ahead of Akron, 27-29, in the women's 6K to start the day. Junior Leah Lisle led the effort with a third-place finish in 22:30. Seniors Nicole Fleming (22:41) and Samantha Hyme (22:45) were next to cross the finish line to take fourth and fifth, respectively. Junior Kalli Barrett came in seventh with a time of 23:39 and senior Maddie Dunlap posted a time of 23:45 to round out the team's scorers.
On the men's side, junior Drew Johnson and freshman Braxton Tate joined Stamper with top-10 finishes. Johnson crossed the finish line with a time of 25:22, earning fifth place, while Tate took home ninth place in 26:03. Buffalo held a 22-39 advantage in team scoring.
Kent State will conclude the fall portion of the season with the MAC Cross Country Championships scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21.
