Flashes Take on CMU in Rivalry Battle

KENT, Ohio – Kent State gymnastics will head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan on Sunday, February 23 at 1 p.m. in McGuirk Arena.
The Golden Flashes are 8-1 overall this season and have the second highest all-around score in the MAC with a 196.050.
Nationally, the Flashes are ranked 39th with an average all-around score of 194.435. Kent State ranks second in the MAC on floor with an average score of 48.795. The Golden Flashes are ranked third in the MAC on vault and beam averaging a 48.760 and 48.590.
Freshman Rachel DeCavitch has the second highest all-around score in the MAC with a 39.400. On bars, the freshman is seventh in the MAC with a 9.765 average. DeCavitch has been named MAC Gymnast of the Week two times this season with fellow freshman Karlie Franz picking up another.
Senior Jade Brown is tied for the highest floor score in the MAC with a 9.925. She is tied with fellow Golden Flash junior, Nasha Manitkul-Davis. Sophomore Riley Danielson is ranked third in the MAC on beam with an average score of 9.850. Freshman Olivia Amodei is ranked fifth in the MAC with an average all-around score of 39.013 with DeCavitch just behind her in sixth with a 38.895.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes went 2-0 defeating George Washington on Sunday, Feb. 2 and Cornell on Friday, Feb. 7. The Flashes picked up their eighth-straight win after defeating Cornell.
Against George Washington, the Flashes scored a season high team score of 196.050. As a team, the Golden Flashes posted a season-high on three events including their best score on floor since the 2018 season. They posted a 49.350 floor, a 49.000 on bars and a 48.975 on vault.
Brown and Manitkul-Davis led the floor performance and tied their career-highs with a score of 9.925 to finish in first place. Junior Abby Fletcher placed third with a 9.875.
DeCavitch won the all-around competition with a score of 39.325. She posted a 9.850 on vault and a 9.825 on bars, beam and floor. She tied for the beam title and finished second on vault.
Franz scored 9.800 on vault and floor and finished second in the all-around. Amodei took home the bar title, scoring a career-high of 9.850. Brown and sophomore Madison Iannuzzo tied for third place with a score of 9.800. Brown also tied for third on vault.
On Friday, Amodei led the Golden Flashes on beam (9.800), vault (9.775) and bars (9.775), picking up the individual title on all three events. The freshman set a career high on beam in her performance.
DeCavitch placed second on bars (9.750) and vault (9.700) and finished in third place on beam (9.725). She won the all-around with a score of 38.575.
Senior Sarah McCarty scored a season-high 9.825 on floor and took home the floor title. Brown finished in second place with a 9.800. Sophomore Samantha Henry posted a season-high 9.750 and finished in second place on beam.
Scouting Central Michigan
The Chippewas (2-4, 1-1 MAC) are No. 33 in the country with a MAC-best average score of 194.900. Central Michigan fell to Southern Utah, 197.225-194.850, on Friday, Feb. 7.
Central Michigan ranks in the top two in the MAC on vault, bars and floor. The Chippewas are first on vault, and second on bars and floor in the conference. Central Michigan is No. 16 in the country on vault.
Denelle Pedrick is the top all-around performer in the MAC with an average of 39.305. Pedrick also ranks first in the MAC on floor averaging a 9.875. Hannah Demers and Pedrick are tied for the first in the MAC on vault with an average of 9.850.
Series History
Kent State is 33-49 all-time vs. Central Michigan. Last season, the Golden Flashes were edged by the Chippewas, 194.925-195.175.
Fletcher tied for first place on vault with a 9.800. Fletcher also took the floor title home scoring a 9.875. McCarty finished third on floor with a 9.825. Brown, Iannuzzo and sophomore Madison Trott tied for fifth place on bars with a 9.725.
