Kent State Takes Two Friday at Maverick Classic

ARLINGTON, Texas – Kent State was victorious in both of its games on Friday's opening day at the Maverick Classic, defeating Kansas City, 13-5 in six innings, and Texas Southern, 6-2.
Senior Madi Huck was the winning pitch in the opener, while redshirt sophomore Andrea Scali earned the victory in the nightcap.
Game 1: Kent State 13, Kansas City 5 (6 innings)
A tough start to the day saw the Golden Flashes leave the bases loaded in the top of the first and then commit three errors in the bottom half of the inning to fall behind 5-0.
Kent State struck for six in the third to take the lead. Two walks to open the frame were followed by a double off the bat of Brenna Brownfield that scored Sabrina Kerschner. Walks drawn by Megan Turner and Maria Cegledy forced another run across the plate. Kaitlyn Miller delivered a clutch two-out double down the left field line to put the Flashes ahead.
The fourth inning had a similar beginning, as back-to-back walks preceded a single by Brownfield to score Kerschner.
Olivia Sborlini crushed a two-run shot, her first collegiate home run, in the fifth and Brownfield collected another base-scoring hit.
Kent State added three in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Kellie Abeska and two-run single by Kristyn Eckl.
Brownfield was 3-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs to lead the offense. Kerschner also reached safely in each trip to the plate, drawing three walks to go with an infield single, and scored three times.
Madi Huck (2-0) tossed a one-hitter while not allowing an earned run.
Game 2: Kent State 6, Texas Southern 2
Andrea Scali (2-1) dominated in a relief appearance for the Flashes, earning the victory while striking out several batters.
Kent State struck for a run in the top of the first inning. Sabrina Kerschner singled, moved to third on a groundout and single by Brenna Brownfield, and then scored on a two-out single by Kaitlyn Miller.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead, but the Flashes went on to plate five unanswered runs for the victory.

First pitch for Kent State's first game on Saturday is 10 a.m. ET against Stephen F. Austin. The Flashes will look to complete weekend sweep of Texas Southern at 3 p.m. ET.
