Flashes Knock Off Chippewas in MAC Showdown

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Kent State gymnastics team earned a hard-fought 195.175-195.075 victory over Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan inside McGuirk Arena.
The Golden Flashes won their ninth-consecutive matchup and have not lost in over a month. They improved to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the MAC.
"I'm unbelievably proud of this team," said Head Coach Brice Biggin. "They competed so well as a team and stayed focused through out the entire meet. It is always tough to win at Central Michigan, so I am really pleased with our performance!"
Freshman Rachel DeCavitch helped the Flashes jump out to an early lead on bars with a third-place finish (9.850). Senior Jade Brown finished in fourth place with a 9.825, while fellow senior Sammi Nero scored a 9.775 in her first action of the season.
Another gymnast making the most of her first action of the season was Sophomore Kendra Lindway. The Valley View, Ohio native recorded a career-high 9.825 on vault and her first career individual title. Freshman Karlie Franz and junior Nasha Manitkul-Davis tied for third place with a 9.825.
DeCavitch was back at it on beam, tying her career-high with a 9.875 and winning the beam title.
Brown, Franz and junior Abby Fletcher each scored a 9.825 on floor and tied for third place.
Central Michigan's Denelle Pedrick won the all-around competition with a score of 39.400.
Kent State travels to Muncie, Ind. to take on another MAC opponent, Ball State. The teams will face off Sunday, Feb., 23 at 1 p.m. The Flashes return home on Friday, Feb. 28 to host the Pink Meet against Bowling Green, Ursinus and Brockport.
