KENT, OHIO- Kent State senior outfielder Maria Cegledy has been named one of thirty candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, recognizing excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the CLASS Award, the award requires the player to excel in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition and be a senior in their final year of eligibility.
On the field, Cegledy is a two-time All-MAC outfielder. One of the best defensive outfielders in the conference, she has only one error in her Kent State career and owns a stellar .994 fielding percentage. At the plate, she owns a .315 batting average over the past two seasons. Cegledy's dedication to the game has resulted in her following a hitless freshman season with back-to-back all-conference campaigns. Her on-field improvement is one of many reasons she is highly-respected by her teammates and coaching staff while serving as a role model for younger players.
In the classroom, Cegledy has a perfect 4.0 GPA as an exercise science major. She was a second team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2019 and has been recognized as a MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete each of the past two seasons and is a three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete. After completing her undergraduate degree, she plans on attending Ohio University to attend physical therapy school.
Each year on campus, she has volunteered at the nearby King Kennedy Center to assist in preparing peace baskets for families in need during the winter holiday season. She is an advocate for the softball team's annual 'She Will' game, which is dedicated to promoting the participation of girls and women in sports. Cegledy is a member of Advancement Student-Athlete Ambassadors, an elite group selected to represent Kent State's student-athletes in engagement with the generous athletics donors that help make it possible for a first-class college experience.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed down to a final ten over the course of the season. Those finalists will be placed on a nation-wide ballot where coaches, media and fans will vote for which player best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The 2020 Senior CLASS winner will be announced at the Women's College World Series.
