LUBBOCK, Texas – Kent State lost to 20th-ranked Texas Tech, 9-1 in five innings, at Rocky Johnson Field on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Flashes (7-3) struck in the top of the first inning for the second time in as many games against nationally-ranked opponents this season. Sophomore Sabrina Kerschner drew a walk to start the night and moved to second on a wild pitch. Junior Kennadie Goth followed by slapping a shot past the third baseman that scored Kerschner for an early 1-0 lead. Goth advanced to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a fly ball hit to the warning track by junior Kaitlyn Miller. With two outs, senior Maria Cegledy was thrown out by a step on a dribbler up the middle that prevented Goth from scoring.

A dropped foul ball off the leadoff batter led to a pair of unearned runs for the hosts in the bottom of the second inning. Zoe Jones took advantage of her second chance with a single through the left side. Following a pair of flyouts that would have ended the inning, Kelcy Leach launched a home run over the left field wall for a 2-1 lead.

The Flashes threatened in the top of the third, loading the bases on an infield single by senior Vanessa Vodan and two errors but could not plate a run.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Red Raiders added two more runs on a walk, double, error and sacrifice fly. They scored three in the fourth and two in the fifth to bring the run-rule into effect.

Redshirt sophomore Andrea Scali (3-3) allowed just one earned run on four hits and had two strikeouts in three innings. Senior Madi Huck and sophomore Anilese Kelly each tossed one inning in relief.

Kent State will not be in action this weekend and returns to competition at the Woo Pig Classic in Arkansas from February 28-March 1.
