FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kent State pitching allowed five home runs on Friday in losses to nationally-ranked Florida State and Arkansas during the opening day of action at the Wooo Pig Classic. The Golden Flashes are now 7-5after falling 11-1 to the No. 9/8 Seminoles and 9-5 to the No. 22/21 host Arkansas.
Junior Kaitlyn Miller led the offense with three RBIs and sophomore Alexandria Whitmore was the lone player to collect a hit in both games.
Game 1: #9/8 Florida State 11, Kent State 1
After putting two runners aboard on a walk and hit batter, ace Andrea Scali surrendered back-to-back doubles that brought three runs across the plates in the top of the second.
Florida State extended its lead in the third inning on a single and home run to extend its lead to 5-0.
The bottom of the lineup tried to spark a rally in the bottom of the third, as sophomores Alexandria Whitmore and Megan Turner singled to start the frame. Florida State pitcher Kathryn Sandcock recorded back-to-back strikeouts before inducing a groundball to get out of the jam.
Junior Brenna Brownfield launched her fourth home run of the season to put the Flashes on the board in fourth.
Andrea Scali (3-4) went the distance in the circle and recorded seven strikeouts. She allowed 10 earned runs on six hits.
Game 2: #22/21 Arkansas 9, Kent State 5
With her team one strike away from being shut out for the first time this season, Kaitlyn Miller shot a ball through the right side of the infield to score a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Kent State entered the frame trailing 8-0 and did not have a hit while loading the bases to setup Miller's clutch swing. An error on a ball off the bat of Brenna Brownfield followed, allowing Kennadie Goth to score and get within 8-3.
Arkansas got a run back in the bottom of the inning but left two runners in scoring position to allow the game to continue.
Kent State went down in order in the sixth but displayed its grit by plating two runs in the seventh. Alexandria Whitmore singled up the middle and moved to third on a double to the warning track in left-center by Goth. Miller recorded her third RBI of the day with a groundout to the right side, which also advanced Goth to third. She then sprinted home on a wild pitch to score the final run of the night.
Madi Huck (3-1) allowed five runs on six hits with two strikeouts over 3.1 innings in her first loss of the season. Grace Saupe tossed two solid innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.
