Brownfield’s Bat Leads Flashes Saturday at Wooo Pig Classic

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Kent State dropped two more games in Saturday's action at the Wooo Pig Classic. The Golden Flashes (7-7) fell to No. 23/19 Baylor, 5-2, in the first game of the day and were then beaten in five innings by Villanova, 9-1
After scoring a pair of run on four hits in the first trip to the plate, Kent State managed just one run on six hits the rest of the day. Junior Brenna Brownfield drove over all three of the team's run. Sophomore Sabrina Kerschner and Brownfield had two hits each and junior Kennadie Goth scored once in each game.
Game 1: #23/19 Baylor 5, Kent State 2
The first five batters of the game reached safely as Kent State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Singles by Sabrina Kerschner, Kennadie Goth and Kaitlyn Miller loaded the bases for Brenna Brownfield, who brought in two runs with a double down the left field line. Maria Cegledy followed by drawing a walk to load the bases again, but the Golden Flashes were unable to plate any more runners.
Starting pitcher Madi Huck kept the Bears off the scoreboard until the fifth inning when three singles resulted in a pair of runs to tie the game.
Baylor's Maddison Kettler delivered a clutch two-out double to clear the bases in the bottom of the sixth that gave her team a 5-2 lead.
Kent State's bats came alive in the seventh with singles by Madyson Cole and Kerschner. Down to the final out, Miller walked to load the bases for Brownfield once again. However, she was unable to come through with her second big set of the game and was retired for the final out.
Huck (3-2) went the distance in the circle, finishing with two strikeouts without any walks. Huck allowed just two earned runs in the outing.
Game 2: Villanova 9, Kent State 1 (5 innings)
Villanova used a pair of doubles to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats took advantage of three walks in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0.
Kent State got on the board in the fourth inning when Brenna Brownfield singled up the middle to score Kennadie Goth. The next two batters struck out and the Flashes stranded a pair of runners.
Villanova's first five batters in the top of the fifth collected hits as part of a five-run inning that put the game out of reach.
Andrea Scali (3-5) allowed six runs and had four strikeouts in four innings of work. Gabbie Sherman made her collegiate in relief and was responsible for three runs in one inning.
