ROCK HILL, SC- Luke Albright tossed six shutout innings to earn his first victory of the season and Collin Mathews and Michael Turner had two-hit games as Kent State handed Winthrop its first loss of the season, 5-2 on Friday afternoon.

The Flashes struck early on Friday afternoon, scoring in each of the first three innings. In the first, Kent State took advantage of a one-out triple by Michael Turner as he was brought in on a Justin Kirby ground out. Small ball manufactured a run in the second as Mack Timbrook was hit for the first of three times on Friday to start the inning. He stole second, went to third on a flyout and scored on a squeeze play by Grant Vera. In the third, Ben Carew doubled, and Turner struck again, this time with a rbi single to plate Carew.

Timbrook was hit for the third time to start the sixth and again he stole second. Collin Mathews followed with a triple to score the freshman. Mathews scored as Vera squeezed again and Mathews beat an errant throw home.

That was plenty of support for Luke Albright, who worked his way out of trouble all afternoon long. The sophomore went six innings, allowing eight hits and walking one while striking out six. Albright got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the first and bases loaded situations in both the fifth and the sixth. Zach Schultz threw two innings of relief, striking out four, he did surrender a two-run homer to Cale Gibson in the eighth. Tyler Drabick cleaned things up in the ninth, earning his second save of the season with a spotless inning.

The win moves the Flashes to 5-3 on the season, while Winthrop drops to 8-1 overall. Collin Romel will take the ball on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
