KENT, OHIO- Kent State junior place kicker Matthew Trickett has been named to the 2020 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker watch list as announced by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.
The annual award recognizes the NCAA's top place-kicker. The Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954.
Trickett is coming off a stellar 2019 sophomore campaign, tying for the most field goals in the FBS with 29. He didn't shy away from the big moment, nailing two game-winning "walk-off" field goals against Kennesaw State and Buffalo and adding a late game winner against Ball State. Trickett had three games with four-or-more field goals including a 5-for-5 performance in the Tropical Smoothie Café Frisco Bowl, tying a bowl record.
In addition to his 29 made field goals, Trickett was a perfect 39-for-39 on extra points. His 126 points in 2019 are second in Kent State history to only Dri Archer's 138-point 2012 season. His 126-point 2019 season puts him in elite company on the 2020 Groza Award watch list, placing him third amongst the 30 kickers named.
The watch list will be narrowed down to 20 semi-finalists, based on season accomplishments. The Groza Awards panel will then determine the three finalists and the Award winner will be announced during the annual College Football Awards show on ESPN.
