KENT, OHIO- The Kent State Athletic Department surprised Courtney Rutan, a physical education teacher at Fishcreek Elementary School, with a $1,000 gift card as part of the "Big Day" celebration through the College Football Playoff's Extra Yard for Teachers program.
"This definitely came as a surprise," Rutan said. "I am just so thankful."
Rutan has been a part of the Golden Flashes' family for over eight years. She started the "Moving with the Flashes" program that has become a staple of the Stow elementary school's calendar. Each year, Kent State student-athletes become the coaches at stations set up throughout the school. The student-athletes provide instruction and tips on being healthy and active to students in grades K-through-five. The school is filled with blue and gold decorations to go along with the event.
"After the initial shock wore off, I think that I am going to use the money to buy fitness equipment, specifically pedometers," Rutan added. " I think pedometers can help influence and push my students to become more active at home and in the classroom."
The Big Day celebration supports and recognizes teachers and thanks them for their continued essential service and efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kent State is one of over 150 schools, conferences and organizations who are recognizing teachers and educators that have a direct impact on the school or conference's local community. Over $4 million dollars in grants and direct aid are being awarded to teachers and educators across the country.
Fans are encouraged to also take part in the Big Day celebration by going on social media thanking a teacher or educator that has had a positive impact on their life by using the hashtag #BigDayForTeachers.
