KENT, OHIO- Kent State wrestling is back in action this weekend, making the short trip to Cleveland to take on the Cleveland State Vikings on Saturday.
The two teams will wrestle in a round-robin format, similar to what the Golden Flashes and Ohio Bobcats did last weekend at the West Virginia Mountaineer Duals. No team score will be kept and about 40 duals are scheduled on Saturday. Cleveland State will air "feature" matches on ESPN + starting at 11 a.m.
Kent State was in action last weekend at the Mountaineer Duals. Leading the way was Andrew McNally who went 2-0 at 174 pounds. That upped his ranking into the NCAA top-10 at 174 but multiple publications. Brendon Fenton also went 2-0 for the Golden Flashes at 133 pounds in his first varsity action for the Golden Flashes. Jake Ferri (125), Kody Komara (149) and Tyler Bates (184) all picked up victories last weekend as well.
The Golden Flashes and Vikings are no strangers to one another, this will be the 30th time the two teams have squared off, but the first time in a round-robin format. Last season, Cleveland State edged the Golden Flashes 16-15 in a dual that saw each team win five matches. This will be the first action of the season for the Vikings, who return nine starters from last year's team.
Ben Smith led the Vikings last year with 25 victories and the 197-pounder is Cleveland State's highest ranked wrestler. Smith and Colin McCracken met twice last year with McCracken earning two close victories, including an 8-4 decision at the MAC Championships. Riley Smucker (165) and Logan Heil (125/133) won 24 and 23 matches last year, respectfully.
As mentioned above, Cleveland State will stream "feature" matches on ESPN + starting at 11 a.m. ย The watch link is available on the wrestling schedule page as well as at the top of the story.
It will be a short turnaround for the Golden Flashes who are scheduled to host their first duals of the season on Wednesday as they host Gannon and Mercyhurst. The meet will be held at the Kent State Field House with a 5 p.m. scheduled start.
