KENT, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics team (2-0) beat Eastern Michigan (3-1), 194.875-194.050, on Senior Day at the M.A.C. Center.
The Mid-American Conference leading Golden Flashes posted a season-high 194.875 in Sunday's victory. The team has now scored 194.500+ in all three meets this season.
"I'm happy with the overall result today," said Head Coach Brice Biggin. "We still have some things to work on, but it's always nice to get a win against a MAC opponent. I'm really happy with our senior's performances today, especially Abby [Fletcher]. She came out and did an excellent job in her events. I'm also very happy with Toshi [Richard] and her floor routine. She stepped up and delivered an excellent routine when we needed it most. I still think we can score even better. We just need to continue to be consistent and do a little better early in the events to take some pressure off the rest of the gymnasts."
Fletcher began her senior day on a high note as she tied her career high on vault (9.850) and captured her third individual event title in as many weeks. Kyndall Gilbert finished in second place on vault with a 9.825. It was the freshman's third consecutive top-two finish on vault to start her career.
The Flashes also saw an individual winner on bars with Rachel DeCavitch scoring a 9.875. Maddie Iannuzzo tied for second place with a score of 9.825. She has finished in the top-two in both meets she has competed in this season.
Fletcher continued her senior day dominance with a career-high 9.900 on beam to tie for yet another individual event title. Cami Klein kept her impressive junior season going with a score of 9.775 and a fourth-place finish.
The seniors showed out on floor to close out the meet and bring the Flashes back from trailing after both the second and third rotations. It was Fletcher's day as she swept each individual title on her three events, closing with an impressive 9.875 on floor. Fletcher secured her third floor title of the season and fifth overall title to begin her final season.
Fellow seniors Jade Brown and Richard each scored a 9.875 to tie for first place on the event. It was Brown's second straight top-three finish on floor and first win of the season. Richard has not competed since the 2019 season, but she earned her first career event win on her senior day.
Rachel DeCavitch was the lone all-around competitor, but she posted her second straight 39.000+ score in the event led by her remarkable bars performance.
The Eagles are going to be a familiar opponent for the Flashes over the next two weeks. Kent State will travel to Ypsilanti on both Friday, Feb. 6, and again on Valentine's Day, Sunday, Feb. 14.
