Flashes Can't Fend Off Falcons, Lose 3-2

(KENT, Ohio) - Sunday afternoon, the Kent State women's soccer team lost at home to Bowling Green, 3-2. This drops the Golden Flashes to 6-4-1 for the season, while the Falcons improve to 3-5-3 overall. Each team is now 2-1-1 within the Mid-American Conference.
In a losing effort, Kent State was in this game for all 90 minutes. Redshirt senior forward Cameron Shedenhelm picked up her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 56th minute, on a shot that was assisted by redshirt senior defender Karly Hellstrom. Hellstrom scored a goal of her own in the 15th minute, her second of the season.
But that wouldn't be enough to topple the visiting Falcons, as Bowling Green came out with a barrage of offense that resulted in three goals. The first two Falcons goals were off the feet of sophomore forward Lacee Bethea in the 31st minute (assisted by redshirt senior forward Nikki Cox) and junior defender Audrey Shea in the 50th minute.
The Shea goal made the score 2-1 Bowling Green, before Shedenhelm's goal for Kent State tied things back up a few minutes later. But the play that decided the ultimate outcome of the game would come in the 73rd minute, when Bowling Green's redshirt senior forward Madi Wolfbauer successfully connected on a penalty shot, putting the Falcons out in front for good.
The two sides stacked up similarly in game totals, as each team finished with roughly the same amount of fouls (16-15 Bowling Green) as well as shots (7-5 BGSU). Where the difference lay, however, was in corner kicks, of which Bowling Green had six more than Kent State (8-2). With more opportunities near the other team's box, the Falcons were able to capitalize on those opportunities, and come out of this one with a win.
Next up on the schedule for the Flashes is another home match, this time against Northern Illinois. That contest is set to kick off Thursday night at 7 PM from Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium.
