Flashes Take Care of the Huskies at Home, 2-0

(KENT, Ohio) - Thursday night, the Kent State women's soccer team defeated Northern Illinois at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium, 2-0. This improved the Golden Flashes' record to 7-4-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in Mid-American Conference play, good enough for fourth place in the MAC standings.
This game was all about ball control: Kent State had it, while Northern Illinois did not. The Flashes dominated in the possession department, as they were able to have 15 corner kicks, while the Huskies failed to get any.
And Kent State capitalized off of that possession advantage, in the form of two goals. The first score for the Flashes came from the foot of senior defender Tianna Harris in the 15th minute, her second of the season (assisted by redshirt senior defender Karly Hellstrom). That would be all the scoring either side managed in the first half, before redshirt senior forward Cameron Shedenhelm used her head to knock one in shortly after halftime in the 52nd minute (assisted by sophomore defender Keyosha Donkor), giving the Flashes the 2-0 lead that would eventually become the final score. Her sixth goal of the season, Shedenhelm leads the Flashes in that category, as well as in points (15).
In terms of goalkeeping, Kent junior GK Sarah Melen had little-to-no challenging balls come her way, as Northern Illinois was scarcely able to advance the ball into Flashes territory. The Huskies tried different looks and tactics in order to break through, but Kent State's defense was simply too stellar.
All-in-all, Kent State ended up taking 20 shots, including six shots on-goal. Northern Illinois only found itself taking four and one, respectively. Thus, the Flashes came out on top in this one.
Now, as the regular season begins to wind down, Kent State looks at its schedule and sees only two more home games left. However, there's business to be dealt with sooner than that, which comes in part in the road contest the Flashes have Sunday at Western Michigan. That game is set to kick off at 2 PM.
