KENT, Ohio – The Kent State men's basketball team (5-3) travels to West Virginia (8-1) on Sunday afternoon for a nationally televised contest to wrap up its road non-conference schedule. The Flashes and Mountaineers will square off on ESPN2 at 4 p.m. inside WVU Coliseum.
Kent State returns to West Virginia for the first time since 2011 when Head Coach Rob Senderoff won his first career game during ESPN's 24-hour tip-off special. Assistant Coach, Randal Holt, was a player on the team for one of the biggest regular season wins in school history.
"Playing a team of their caliber with a Hall of Fame coach is going to a tremendous challenge for us," said Senderoff. "It also creates a tremendous opportunity for us as well. We appreciate the chance to play them, and we are really excited for the game on Sunday."
The Golden Flashes got back in the win column against Detroit Mercy on Thursday night with a 69-52 victory. It was the 10th-straight home win for the Flashes immediately coming off a home loss.
Malique Jacobs led the Flashes with his second double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 23 points while adding 11 boards. Giovanni Santiago continued to stroke it from deep, shooting 3-for-6 from behind the arc. It was Santiago's third-straight game with three or more 3-pointers.
The Flashes are the number one free throw shooting team in the nation, making 83.5 percent of their foul shots. Sincere Carry is connecting on 89.3 percent of his free throws, while Jacobs is making 85.7 percent of his. The duo has combined to make 55 free throws this season.
Scouting the Mountaineers
The Flashes will face a top-10 scorer in the nation for the second time in as many games as the Mountaineers' Taz Sherman awaits on Sunday. Sherman is averaging 21.2 points which is tied for 10th in the country. He posted a season-high 28 points against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 26.
West Virginia is fresh off a 56-53 win over No. 15 Connecticut earlier this week. The Mountaineers haven't lost since a matchup against Marquette in which they led by 11 at half. WVU currently sits at 52 in the NET rankings.
As always, the Mountaineers use stifling defense and all out pressure to suffocate opponents. WVU ranks third in the country in turnover margin and has held six of its nine opponents under 60 points.
