BOISE, Idaho - Four-plus hours by air traveling 2,046 miles due west and Kent State has arrived for its second bowl game in three seasons and its first trip to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.
Having arrived in Boise, players and coaches will now begin their final practice sessions ahead of Tuesday's game. But their first order of duty after checking into the hotel was to tackle hunger. Both the Golden Flashes and the Cowboys took part in the Albertson's Tackle Hunger event. The Bowl partners with Albertson's, Feeding Children Everywhere and the Idaho Food Bank in a meal packing effort for the two teams. This year over 42,000 meals were packed on Friday afternoon. The Kent State offense and defense battled in a competition to feed the needy by working together to package as many meals as they could in a one-hour period. Players and coaches spread out in the gymnasium of Bishop Kelly High School and worked as fast as they could to package rice and other ingredients to make jambalaya.
"We're over there packing food for the hungry, and we've got an assembly line and try to beat the defense like we do in everything," said Isacc Vance, receiver.
"It's a great team activity. There's a lot of competition between the offense and defense to pack the most boxes," said Sam Allan, center.
The Bowl also recognizes a student-athlete from each team for the annual Humanitarian Award that honors, "a player from each team for exemplary community service and leadership efforts. The head coach selects one student-athlete that best represents these qualities on and off the field." Kent State's Humanitarian Award winner is Isaac Vance.
Vance currently serves as the president of Kent State's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He also sits on the Mid-American Conference and NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees. He also sits on the D-I Football Oversight Committee, providing a student-athlete prospective on rules and legislation in college football. Vance also serves as the Kent State chapter president for Uplifting Athletes, an organization that raises money for rare disease research. He is a member of the Mid-American Conference Name, Image and Likeness working group and is a Kent State student ambassador. He is also part of the team's second-and-seven club and reads to local elementary school children.
Also on tap during their visit to Idaho, Kent State players will have outdoor adventure trip that includes Go-Kart racing, take in an Idaho Steelheads hockey game and watch the Golden Flashes' band and spirit programs take part in the annual Mash Bash.
The Mid-American Conference East Division champion Golden Flashes (7-6) will take on Wyoming (6-6) on Tuesday, December 21 at 3:30 p.m. (EST). The game will air on ESPN and the Kent State Radio Network.
