Flashes Celebrate Academic Success of Fall Semester

KENT, OHIO- For the 20th consecutive semester, the Kent State Athletic Department has posted a cumulative term grade-point average (GPA) over 3.0.
"Fall 2021 marked the first term back to traditional learning and grading at Kent State since the start of the pandemic in spring 2020," Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services Angie Hull said. After three terms of mostly online learning, remote study hours and pass/fail grading, our students had to reacclimate to a new normal, once again. We are incredibly proud that the KSU student-athletes rose to the occasion and recorded the 4th highest fall term department GPA in recorded history."
The historical GPA records for the department mark a triumphant return to in-person learning. 307 student-athletes had a GPA of 3.0 or higher, 216 earned Dean's List honors with a GPA of 3.4 or higher and 56 student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 semester. Nine teams posted an average GPA or 3.4 or higher. Leading the way was the women's cross-country team while the men's golf team earned top honors on the men's side.
"After a busy Fall semester, with so much transition and excitement, this is one awesome way to close it out!" said Director of Athletics Randale L. Richmond. "Adjusting to the ever-changing climate is not only a testament to our student-athletes, but also our vital academic support staff."
The Kent State Field hockey program led the department with NINE student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. The squad posted the second-highest team GPA in program history with 65% of the team earning Dean's List honors.
Several teams posted one of the highest grade-point averages in program history. The Flashes' baseball program recorded their highest fall-term grade point average and second-highest grade-point average ever. Half of the team earned a 3.4 grade-point average or higher, achieving Dean's List honors as well.
The Golden Flashes' football team posted the third-highest fall term GPA in program history with 22% of student-athletes earning a 3.4 grade-point average or higher and Dean's List status. With six new graduates, 26% of the team has earned at least their bachelor's degree.
On the hard court, one-third of the men's basketball team earned Dean's List honors while nearly half of the team posted a 3.0 GPA or higher. The women's team had four student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 this semester while two-thirds of the team earned Dean's List accolades.
The Golden Flashes' softball program saw four student-athletes post a perfect 4.0 semester. Over three-fourths of the team had a GPA of at least 3.0 with over 60% earning Dean's List honors.
On the links, the men's golf team posted a pair of perfect 4.0 semesters while 75% of the team had at least a 3.4 GPA and earned Dean's List Status. On the women's side every student-athlete posted at least a 3.0 GPA.
Wrestling saw over half of their student-athletes earn at least a 3.0 grade-point average this semester, while three student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0.
The cross-country programs had another excellent semester in the classroom. The men's program saw half of their student-athletes earn a 3.0 GPA or higher with one perfect 4.0 mark. On the women's side, 75% of the student-athletes had at least a 3.0 with six student-athletes earning a 4.0.
On the track, nearly half of the student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher on the men's side while the women's team had over 60% of their student-athletes earning Dean's List honors with at least a 3.4 GPA. Eight women and one male track student-athlete earned a perfect 4.0.
The gymnastics program had a very strong year in the classroom. Five gymnasts had a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning President's List status while 63% of the student-athletes earned Dean's List honors and nearly 80% of the team had at least a 3.0 GPA.
The women's lacrosse team had 80% of their team earn at least a 3.0 GPA while over 70% earning Dean's List honors. Six student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0.
On the pitch, over 65% of the soccer student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA with over 60% earning Dean's List honors. Four members of the soccer team earned a perfect 4.0 and President's List honors.
The volleyball team had over half of their team make the Dean's List with two earning President's List honors. Over 80% of the team had a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
"These statistics are also a reflection of the support system of coaches, academic staff and campus faculty working together to support our KSU student-athletes on a daily basis. Congratulations to all!" Hull added.
The Golden Flashes closed the fall semester with the graduation of 21 student-athletes and marked the first in-person celebration in two years.
