KENT, Ohio – The Kent State men's basketball team (4-3) fell just short of completing what would have been a wild comeback against Towson (6-3) on Monday night inside the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
The Tigers blitzed the Golden Flashes out of the gate and began the game on a 19-2 run that included five three-pointers. Towson led by as many as 21 in the first half – the largest Kent State deficit of the season.
Giovanni Santiago helped the Flashes nearly cut it to single digits before the break, but a circus shot at the buzzer for the Tigers sent them into the locker room up 14. Santiago finished the game with 16 points.
The Flashes nearly came all the way back to take the lead in the second half, using a 16-4 run with multiple guys getting involved to cut the lead to just three points, 61-58 with 5:02 to play.
However, that was the last of the Flashes' offense for the game as they were shut out the rest of the way. Towson finished out the game and picked up a 73-58 victory. Sincere Carry led the Flashes in scoring with 17 points.
Towson was led by their star player Cameron Holden who recorded a near triple double and was facilitating all night. He scored just seven points but added 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Nicolas Timberlake (22) and Antonio Rizzuto (18) led the Tigers in scoring. The lethal shooting combo combined to shoot 8-for-15 from three-point range.
Shooting was the downfall for the Flashes on both sides of the ball. The offense shot just 28.8 percent from the field and only 25 percent from three. Meanwhile, Towson shot 52.8 percent from the field and 48 percent from deep.
