KENT, OHIO- Kent State heads to Athens on Sunday for the final traditional dual of the season and the annual Grudge Match with the Ohio Bobcats.
The Golden Flashes and Bobcats will meet for the 74th time on Sunday, 20 more times than any other opponent for Kent State (Central Michigan). The Flashes have won 48 of the 73 previous meetings but the Bobcats have claimed the last two duals.
This will be the return to the mat for both squads. Each team last wrestled back on January 23rd, each participating in conference tri-meets. Ohio lost to both Missouri and Northern Illinois while Kent State defeated Southern Illinois at Edwardsville but lost to the host Clarion Eagles.
These two rivals did partially meet at the beginning of the season. Both schools were a part of the Mountaineer Dual hosted by West Virginia. While the two schools didn't formally meet in a dual, the two schools did meet in five extra matches. The Bobcats won four of the five extra matches. We could potentially see two rematches if Mario Guillen and Jacob Gould meet up (Gould won 6-0) and if Mike Caniglia and John Mark Williams face each other (Williams won 3-2). Below is the projected lineup for Sunday's Grudge Match.
125: Jake Ferri (7-1) vs Gio Disabato
133: Brendon Fenton (4-0) OR Patrick Gould (5-3) vs Mario Guillen or Conor McCrone
141 Avry Mutschler (1-7) vs Kyran Hagan
149: Kody Komara (6-2) vs Andrew Knick
157: Ian Senz (2-7) vs Jordan Slivka or Nick Vestal
165: James Limongi (1-3) vs Colt Yinger
174: Mike Caniglia (2-3) vs Logan Stanley or John Mark Williams
184: Tyler Bates (3-3) vs Mason Kroening
197: Colin McCracken (5-3) vs Colin McNamara
285: Jacob Cover (2-6) vs Jordan Earnest or Jacob Padilla
Sunday's match will be streamed by the Ohio Bobcats and air on ESPN +. ย Coverage will start at 1 p.m. EST. Links can be found at the top of the preview story as well as the wrestling schedule page.
The Golden Flashes will wrap up the regular season with a round-robin meet with Edinboro and Northern Illinois on Friday, February 12th. The teams will wrestle on three mats with no team score being kept. The round-robin meet will start at noon. Kent State will honor its senior class prior to the start.
