Flyers Top Flashes in Series Opener

DAYTON, OHIO- Nick Elsen and Michael Turner both homered for the Golden Flashes but big innings by the Dayton Flyer offense proved too much on Friday in a 14-2 setback to the Flyers at Woerner Field.
Dayton put up a five spot in the first inning on Friday with the big blow coming on a Eddie Pursinger grand slam. The Flyers took advantage of an error and three hit batters in the inning.
The Flashes threatened in the top of the second thanks to a Mack Timbrook single and Michael McNamara double, but couldn't bring either in to score. Lane worked a quiet second as he was able to pitch around a one out walk and double by getting a strikeout and foul out to end the inning. After a quiet third inning, Lane got chased in the fourth, two more hit batters put runners at first and second as Lane gave way to freshman Benny Roebuck. The righty was rudely greeted by Alex Brickman who made it 8-0 Dayton with a three-run homer.
Dayton manufactured another run in the fourth and led 9-0 before Nick Elsen got Kent State on the board with a pinch-hit solo shot in the fifth. The Flyers got the run back in the bottom of the fifth and added another insurance run, using two walks and two singles to plate a pair and lead 11-1 after five. Michael Turner parked his fifth homer of the season in the sixth, a solo shot to make it 11-2, Collin Mathews singled and made his way to third but was stranded there. The Flyers would tack on three more in the sixth before Aidan Longwell came in to pitch in his college debut. The pitcher/first baseman threw two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief in his debut, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
The loss drops the Golden Flashes to 7-9 on the season while Dayton improves to 6-15. The same two teams will face off again tomorrow with Luke Albright scheduled to go to the mound for Kent State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
