BUFFALO, N.Y. – Buffalo hit six home runs against Kent State on Wednesday afternoon to take both games of a doubleheader by scores of 4-2 and 7-2.
The Golden Flashes (16-21, 12-11 MAC) totaled 12 hits on the day, but only one went for extra bases. Meanwhile, 12 of the host Bulls' 14 hits went for extra bases.
Junior Brooklyn Whitt led Kent State with three hits on the day. Freshman Emily Lippe had a RBI single in each game.
Game 1: Buffalo 4, Kent State 2
The Golden Flashes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Alexis Taube started the frame with a single, then moved to third on a sac bunt and groundout. Brooklyn Whitt lined the ball past the first baseman to score Taube.
A leadoff walk in the bottom half of the inning helped Buffalo take the lead. A double put two in scoring position, and both were able to score on a two-out single through the right side. The Bulls added a run in the fourth and fifth on a solo homer and a pair of doubles.
An error to start the top of the seventh helped give Kent State a chance to rally. Down to the final out, Emily Lippe brought pinch runner Julia Mazanec in from second base with a single up the middle. Whitt, who reached safely in each of her first three plate appearances of the day, then stepped to the plate representing the tying run. She sent a liner near the line in right field, but the Buffalo outfielder made a nice catch on the run to end the game.
Jessica LeBeau (10-10) went the distance in the circle and had 10 strikeouts for her third double-digit strikeout performance in her last four starts.
Game 2: Buffalo 7, Kent State 2
The Bulls hit four solo home runs over the first four innings to lead 4-1. Kent State scored its first run in the top of the second when Alexandria Whitmore's single to right field brought home Brooklyn Whitt, who started the frame with an infield single.
The Flashes collected three hits in the top of the fifth but only plated a single run. Back-to-back singles with two outs by Alexis Taube and Emily Lippe brought home Sabrina Kerschner to get within 4-2. Whitt followed with a bouncer over the pitcher's head that the shortstop was able to field near second base and make a diving tag of the Flashes' runner to end the threat.
Buffalo added three insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Gabbie Sherman (5-9) had two strikeouts and allowed four runs over 3.2 innings. Morgan Bowers tossed the final 2.1 innings for the Flashes, striking out three and allowing two earned runs.
