KENT, OHIO- The Golden Flashes rode a six-run third inning to a 8-3 victory over Akron on Monday afternoon, securing the series win and the coveted Wagon Wheel point.

Monday's victory gives Kent State a 7.5 to 6.0 lead over Akron in the year-long Wagon Wheel rivalry competition. One victory over Akron in softball on Wednesday would clinch the season-long competition for Kent State.

Benny Roebuck got the ball on Monday for his first collegiate start. The right-hander out of Flower Mound, Texas delivered four innings of two-run ball with a pair of strike outs.

The offense got Roebuck support in the third inning. Ben Carew started things off with his team-leading seventh homer of the season, a solo shot to left field. The next four batters all reached, highlighted by a Justin Miknis run-scoring double. That chased Akron starter Mark Meyer after two-plus innings of work. Kent State sent 10 men to the plate in the third, scoring six times on five hits,

Akron got on the board in the fourth on a line-drive, two-run homer by Connor Regan and was the only mistake made by Roebuck on the day. Miknis got one of the runs back in the fifth, hitting a towering drive over the scoreboard in right field for his second home run of the season. Ben Carew tacked on a late rbi double to cap the scoring.

Peyton Deats worked two scoreless innings to get his second win of the season and Aidan Longwell and Max Rippl finished things off for the Flashes with Rippl striking out the side in the ninth.

The victory moves Kent State over .500 at 22-21 and 15-13 in the MAC. Akron is now 11-31 and 5-27 in conference play. The Golden Flashes hit the road this weekend, traveling to Muncie to take on Ball State. The four-game series gets started on Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
