KENT, OHIO- Kent State student-athletes topped the Mid-American Conference and ranked 19th nationally in the annual Helper Helper community service report.
The Golden Flashes totaled 2,115 service hours during the 2020-21 academic year. Kent State student-athletes were able to use the relationships they had in the community to find creative ways to give back to the area.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, traditional visits and reading sessions with elementary schools were not available. Instead, student-athletes adjusted and worked with teachers and administrators to schedule virtual reading sessions over Zoom. As an alternative to working at local animal shelters much like in past years, student-athletes organized a collection of old t-shirts and turned them into dog toys.
"This past year brought challenges to every aspect of the student-athlete experience," said Katie Schilling, Associate Director of Student Athlete Development. "I am incredibly proud of the way the student athletes responded and found ways to support those in need."
The student athletes also sought out new volunteer opportunities over the last year. Letters were written to the elderly and underprivileged kids and families to show support during the difficult times. Teams also cleaned up the community, taking on yard work for residents around the community.
Helper Helper also recognized several individual programs for their community service work. Kent State wrestling topped all Division-I wrestling programs in community service hours. Men's and women's golf (#2), women's lacrosse (#5), field hockey (#6) and gymnastics (#8) were also recognized for their efforts.
