(KENT, Ohio) - On Sunday afternoon, the Kent State women's soccer team opened its home schedule against Dayton, losing 5-0. This puts the Golden Flashes at 1-1 on the season, following a victory at Cleveland State Thursday.
Dayton proved why it has been ranked where it is in the preseason polls, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a goal by midfielder Marlee Taylor, assisted by Jessica Sheldon. Taylor would then add on to her scoring, when she got her second goal roughly 15 minutes later, this time unassisted, to put Kent State in a 2-0 hole partway through the first half.
In the 35th minute, the Flashes were dealt another crucial blow, when senior forward Autumn Meisenberg was awarded a red card, ejecting her from the contest and forcing Kent State to play at a one-player disadvantage for the rest of the game.
Capitalizing on this extended power play opportunity, Dayton picked up one more goal before halftime, this time by forward Noel Blain, assisted by Madison Wilson.
In the second half, the Flyers would increase their lead, grabbing a goal in the 49th minute off the foot of midfielder Jessica Sheldon, assisted by Hannah Osland and Lexy Kidd. One more goal in the 58th minute, this time by forward Laney Huber, would place the score at 5-0 Dayton, where it would remain for the rest of the day.
Dayton finished with 13 shots compared to Kent's seven, including 10 shots-on-goal to the Flashes' two. Additionally, Dayton had six corner kicks compared to Kent's one. The Flyers' Madison Wilson was given a yellow card in the 79th minute.
Next up on the Flashes' schedule is a home game against Youngstown State on Thursday at 7 P.M.
