(KENT, Ohio) - The Kent State women's soccer team takes to the turf at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium Thursday at 7 P.M. against visiting Youngstown State. The Golden Flashes look to improve upon their 1-1 record after a week of regular season play, having defeated Cleveland State on the road before losing to Dayton in the home opener.
About the Flashes
Head coach Rob Marinaro's unit comes into Thursday's match having scored two goals thus far this season on 15 total shots. Redshirt senior forward Cameron Shedenehlm leads the team in shots with six, including one that resulted in a goal in the Cleveland State game last Thursday. The other goal was scored by freshman midfielder Alisa Arthur, the first of her college career. Shedenhelm and Arthur each have two points this season, tied with redshirt sophomore forward Lauryn Arruda, who picked up the assist on both of those goals.
However, the Flashes are still working towards finding their midseason form, having succumbed to four yellow cards in the first game at Cleveland State before picking up a red card early in the Dayton game and being forced to play at a one-player disadvantage for the majority of regulation. Ultimately, this would play a major role in the outcome of that contest being what it was, a 5-0 Flyers victory.
Scouting the Penguins
But the season is still very young, and Kent State will look to regain their footing Thursday night against Youngstown State. The Penguins find themselves possessing an 0-1 record as they take the short drive west on I-76 from Mahoning to Portage County, having lost in their first game at Bucknell, 1-0. In that game, YSU managed to take only three shots, compared to Bucknell's 23. Freshman forward Rachel Austin took two of those shots and is a player that the Flashes will have to contain. The Penguins also lost the battle of fouls in that game, 13-11, and yellow cards, 3-0.
