(KENT, Ohio) - The Kent State women's soccer team defeated visiting Akron at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium Thursday night, 1-0. This signified the a victory for the Golden Flashes in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel game against the Zips and also served as an opening day win for KSU's Mid-American Conference schedule.
Only one goal was scored on either side on this chilly fall night, and it came from the foot of senior forward Khyla Porter, who put the ball in the back of the net in the 25th minute to give the Flashes a lead that they would be able to hold for the rest of the game. The goal was Porter's fourth of the season, tying her with redshirt senior forward Cameron Shedenhelm for the team lead in that category. Freshman midfielder Siena Stambolich picked up the assist on the play.
Overall, it was a relatively uneventful contest. Two rivals battled for 90 minutes, oftentimes getting the ball into opposition territory but being unable to score. The Flashes took 14 shots, while the Zips took eight. Kent State had five corner kicks, while Akron had four.
On the penalty front, there wasn't much to report either. No cards were given out on either side, although the foul total was 15 for Kent State and 10 for Akron.
Despite the seeming lack of action when looking at the box score, this game was packed with action, intensity, and fan investment. And when that final horn sounded to give Kent State the victory, the stands erupted in cheers.
The win puts the Flashes at 5-3 on the season and keeps them high in the MAC rankings. Now, Kent State will look to continue this momentum into the weekend, as they head to upstate New York to take on a talented Buffalo squad. That game is set to take place Sunday at 12 PM.
