(BUFFALO, New York) - On Sunday afternoon, the Kent State women's soccer team played a game at Buffalo that resulted in a tie after double overtime, 0-0. This puts the Golden Flashes at 5-3-1 on the season.
In a game where both sides failed to score over the course of 120 minutes, it can be difficult to summarize the key events of the contest. But the 0-0 final score actually doesn't truly reflect the manner in which the game was played. Kent State and Buffalo were each fairly aggressive in their offensive attacks, with the Flashes managing to get off 19 shots, while the Bulls had 27 (11 and 14 shots-on-goal, respectively).
Stingy defense was the name of the game in this one though, as those shots were unable to make it through, thanks to the superb goalkeeping of Kent State junior Sarah Melen and Buffalo senior Emily Kelly (who had 14 and 11 saves, respectively). Additionally, on the Kent State side, defensive players that don't normally show up in the box score but who play their hearts out, such as defenders Keyosha Donkor, Grace Barresi, and Tianna Harris, put up quite an effort to keep the Bulls' scoring attempts at bay.
Each team ended up with 11 fouls and two yellow cards apiece, signifying a truly evenly played match. And, despite the fact that the game didn't result in a victory for the Flashes, head coach Rob Marinaro and his staff certainly have to feel encouraged by the way that their team played against one of the best schools in the MAC.
Now, the Flashes will prepare to take on the team with the highest winning percentage of any team in the conference on Thursday, when they travel to northwest Ohio to face off with the Toledo Rockets. That game is set to kick off at 7 PM.
