(KENT, Ohio) - The Kent State women's soccer team is set for a duo of contests at the end of the week, as they prepare to play Toledo on the road Thursday, before hosting Bowling Green Sunday.
About the Flashes
Kent State comes into the week with a 5-3-1 record, following a week in which they defeated Kent State 1-0 at home last Thursday, before traveling to Buffalo Sunday and having the game result in a 0-0 tie after going to double overtime. In that game against the Bulls, junior goalkeeper Sarah Melen put up quite an effort for the Golden Flashes, saving 14 shot attempts, which is the most by any KSU goalie since 1999. The Flashes had 11 shots-on-goal themselves, but weren't quite able to get one to go through, and the game ended with the scoring deadlock failing to be lifted, and a tie being issued.
In the Akron game, senior forward Khyla Porter was the player who put the Flashes on the board and ultimately gave them the victory, as her fleet-footed and aggressive offensive attack was too much for the Zips defenders to handle. She was assisted by freshman midfielder Siena Stambolich on the play. The goal was Porter's fourth for the season, tying her for the team lead with redshirt senior forward Cameron Shedenhelm.
Scouting the Rockets
Toledo currently sits at 7-1-2 overall, including 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Their .800 winning percentage is first in the MAC. In their lasting outing against Western Michigan, Toledo won 2-0, thanks to goals by sophomore midfielder Grace Turski (her first) and sophomore forward Ellie Pool (her third). Freshman midfielder Olivia Dault leads the Rockets in goals with four, as well as points with eight. Pool is second on the team in both categories. Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Boutorwick has 34 saves on the year. The last time the Golden Flashes faced Toledo was in 2019, in a game which they won, 3-0.
Scouting the Falcons
Bowling Green has been less successful this season than its rival, Toledo, as the Falcons come into the week with a record of only 2-5-2 (1-1 in MAC play). Redshirt senior forward Madi Wolfbauer leads the team with four goals and nine points on 35 total shot attempts. Redshirt senior forward Nikki Cox has eight points. In their last game (as of the publishing of this article), the Falcons lost to Northern Illinois, 2-1. The Falcons took 28 shots in that one, but only nine were on-goal. The last time Kent State played Bowling Green in the shortened spring 2021 season, the Falcons beat the Flashes, 5-0.
