KENT, Ohio - The Kent State gymnastics team won their first meet of the season on Sunday, defeating Northern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State at home. The Golden Flashes finished with a final score of 195.300, topping the Huskies and RedHawks, who finished at 194.150 and 191.500, respectively.
The Flashes topped the leaderboards in every category except the balance beam, with junior Olivia Amodei coming in first place on both bars and floor (tied for first on bars). Additionally, sophomore Kyndall Gilbert came in first on the vault with a score of 9.875, and junior Rachel DeCavitch placed first all-around with a score of 38.800.
SEMO competed well, given the fact that they were not slated to participate in this meet as recently as Thursday. The RedHawks had the final first place finish of the meet, with Anna Kaziska registering a 9.875 on the beam. NIU, the Flashes' Mid-American Conference foe, failed to finish first in any event. However, that did not prevent them from putting up a strong, consistent effort for the duration of the meet, giving the Flashes a run for their money until the end.
But Kent State would ultimately prevail, with five Flashes combining to post 11 personal records on the afternoon.
Now the Flashes will have a week to prepare for their next meet, a road affair against Ball State. That meet is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan,. 23.
