KENT, OHIO- The Golden Flashes got the better of their local and MAC rival Cleveland State, defeating the Vikings 25-9 in front of an energetic M.A.C. Center crowd on Thursday night.
The two local rivals split the first two bouts on Thursday night. Brendon Fenton earned a big 6-1 victory, controlling his match with Jake Manley with over 90 seconds of riding time. This after Jake Ferri lost a tough opening match after his third period comeback attempt fell short.
Kent State picked up six points after Cleveland State forfeited at 141 pounds but the two local rivals had a pair of classics at 149 and 157 pounds. Kody Komara lost a 3-2 decision to Marcus Robinson after a late takedown by Robinson survived a challenge from Kent State head coach Jim Andrassy. Bobby Pryhocki used a reversal and got a two-point takedown in the first extra period to edge Daniel Patten 4-2 and give Kent State a 12-6 lead. Patten entered the dual as the MAC's number-five wrestler at 157 pounds.
Brady Chrisman kept the excitement going at 165 pounds, using a third-period reversal to force extra time against Riley Smucker. Chrisman was persistent in the first extra period, following a near takedown with a successful shot that landed the deciding blow in a 7-5 victory for the Medina, Ohio native. Michael Ferree kept the momentum on the home side and made it 18-6 in favor of the Flashes with a 4-2 victory with riding time over Anthony Rice. Ferree controlled much of the bout, using a first-period takedown to grab an early lead.
Colin McCracken had little trouble with Jax Leonard at 184 pounds, using a dominant third period to earn a major decision victory, 18-4. McCracken got a four-point near fall and amassed over two minutes of riding time in the victory. Jacob Cover put an exclamation point on the victory, getting a takedown with under 15 seconds left to edge John Kelby 4-3.
The Golden Flashes are on the road on Sunday, heading to Clarion for a 3 p.m. conference dual. Kent State returns home next weekend for a pair of duals, starting with the annual Grudge Match with Ohio on Friday night starting at 7 p.m.
