CLARION, PA- The Golden Flashes closed a perfect week with a strong road effort, edging the Clarion Golden Eagles, 21-16 on Sunday afternoon.
Kent State got off to a quick start, winning five of the first six matches. Jake Ferri had a dramatic win to start, getting a takedown with just seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time. The Massachusetts native wasted little time in the first overtime, getting a take down that survived a Clarion challenge. Ferri won the battle of ranked wrestlers, 6-4. Brendon Fenton had another strong showing, controlling the matchup with Alex Blake from the start and winning an 8-3 decision to put the Flashes up 6-0.
Kody Komara had the dominant performance of the day, earning a first-period fall just 88 seconds into his bout. His pin of Lavinsky Collins gave Kent State a 12-3 lead. Bobby Pryhocki didn't need the drama he had on Thursday night, he controlled his bout with Kyle Schickel, using a big third period to pull away for a 9-2 win. Brady Chrisman DID need the dramatics that he had on Thursday night in his match with #33 Cam Pine. After a dramatic overtime win over Cleveland State over Riley Smucker on Thursday, he took out another top wrestler on Sunday. Chrisman used a lone escape and riding time to shutout Pine 2-0, giving him two big-time wins on the week and giving Kent State an 18-3 lead. Colin McCracken clinched the victory for the Flashes, getting a 3-1 victory over Max Wohlabaugh to put the Flashes up 21-8, a lead too big for the Golden Eagles to overcome.
Kent State is now 5-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. The Golden Flashes are home for a pair of duals next week, first up is the annual Grudge Match against Ohio on Friday with a schedule start of 7 p.m.
